I've always wondered what kind of woman I was. This question began to form in my mind right after Preston and I were married. We were working with another married couple and the Husband, let's call him Barry, cut his finger and passed out cold on the ground. Then his wife, let's call her Mary, FREAKED out. I am talking screaming, crying, fanning herself, hysteria, the end of the world -kind of freaking out. She freaked out so much that the paramedics that came said," You're the reason he passed out...YOU need to calm down." "I would never behave that way," I reassured myself. "I have pioneer ancestors... I'm hardy," I said in my mountain woman voice. But somewhere deep inside me there was doubt. Am I really a pioneer woman? Or would I be fanning myself screaming hysterically next to Mary?
Last night my years of wondering came to an end.
Preston and I were cleaning up dinner when Tyler came stumbling into the kitchen in obvious distress. His face was red and he was gasping and clutching his throat. He was chocking and BAD. He tried to talk but nothing came out and he was frantic, which was making things worse. What did I do? Did I try to calm him down? Give him the Heimlich Maneuver? I would love to say that I was calm and reasonable, reassuring my 3 year old that it would be OK. I would love to say that I sang "Come Come Ye Saints" while I performed the Heimlich Maneuver. But alas, that is not the story. I freaked out. I screamed and panicked and yes, I even fanned myself. Thankfully Preston stayed calm and gave him the Heimlich Maneuver(I think I may have even heard him humming the afore mentioned hymn) and the NICKEL that was lodged in Tyler's throat came flying out along with much of his dinner.
It's disappointing to discover you are not what you thought you are...You're not a mountain woman...Not a Pioneer...I cried myself to sleep last night...It was the end of an Era.

That is totally SCARY! I am glad he is ok. You don't have to be a mountain woman all the time!

lol andrea! i totally relate to you. during caleb's extraveganza's (also known as seizures) i completely fall apart. i can't cope to save my life. ben is the cool & calm one & i just stumble around praying & bawling in between barking orders at him. i turn into a loon. caleb ate a quarter once & ben was by himself. he said that his lips turned blue & he could only breathe out but everytime he breathed in the quarter would re-lodge itself. he had to do the baby choking thing but said he was scared too. which means i would have walked out of the situation with bald patches on my head. glad ty's okay & that there's at least one calm one in the relationship.

-ps, to make this comment LONGER. almost called you yesterday. i'm sure you know what about. i had to restrain myself but it was extremely difficult. i need to stop my neg. thoughts, it's out of control!!

Great job Preston! I must say I am rather impressed. I would have done the same thing you did Andrea, I would have freaked. Give yourself some credit though if Preston would have been gone you would have had to be calm and sing the song. :)

I must not have pioneer heritage. I totally fall apart too. I just can't hardly cope! I don't know why--but I just go to pieces.

I am glad he is okay!

Sister Golding that is not true. You are MUCH BETTER than a pioneer or a mountain women. You are a regular person so ya... you ARE going to freak out when things like that happen... I probably would have fainted. but it doesn't make you not a pioneer if you don't react the way you want. I think it makes you MORE of one because you can who that you aren't perfect and even great daughters of god make mistakes. Don't feel bad. You are a GREAT mother.

Oh Andrea, that is crazy! Once my little sister when she was a toddler, she was choking on a whole orange (practically) and I was the only one around and I had to do the Heimlich maneuver on her but I think if it were one of my own children and not just my sister I would have freaked out too. Good thing he came to you before he passed out while choking, okay so that comment probably didn't help sorry. I'm glad it all ended well! You're a good mother, but umm remember this is coming from a mom who just a week ago lost her son in a crowd of a million children so I'm not sure if that's saying much :)

oh how scary! You don't always have to be the calm one. when Ry shoved a penny up his nose, Dustin and I both were freaking out and finally one of us got the bright idea to call the pediatrician. At least you have a calm and level headed guy to help you out. (I am glad he is okay.)

Hey I think we all do this. The other night Will got Andrew's vitamins and who knows how many he ate. I started thinking it would die from Iron Overdose....so Brent calmly calls the poison control. It is good thing we have husbands!

You are a pioneer woman. I mean that in the most complimentary way possible. I'm still figuring it out everyday.
