Wanna Know What Irritates Me?

I am sure most of you don't...but for the record I want to say that Word Verification is very irritating. They always have you typing in the most illogical set of letters, they are stretched and warped - nearly impossible to decipher. Every time I see one I think of an Elderly 87 year old and think, "Well there ain't NO way she'd be figuring this one out." Let's not kid ourselves I also think of a 25 year old with decent vision and know she's having a hard time figuring it out as well. Many times I go to leave a comment on some lovely blog post, see the word verification and exit right out...
So...someone enlighten me - what are they for and why do you have them on your blogs?

I think they are used to thwart spammers away. I could be totally wrong, but it sounds like that would be it!

AMEN SISTER!!

Yes, it IS used to keep spammers away, but it is SOOOO annoying!! Especially on private blogs--where spammers can't be.

Really, SOOO much easier to leave a comment sans secret code.

hee hee! They are to thwart comment spam-- I have my blog set to private, so I should turn mine off . . . but I have never thought of it until now!

I don't like them either! They drive me crazy too. I always wondered what they were for, thanks for asking the question so I could get the answer.

I don't like them but when I didn't have it on mine I got all sorts of crazy dirty spam messages. Sorry!

It would have to give me a thousand dollars for each visitor for me to put it on my blog.
